Principal's Welcome

Welcome to the website for Hollybush Primary and Nursery School. I hope what you see on this site will give you a flavour of life in our beautiful school.

It is very hard to encapsulate in a paragraph or two what makes our school and its ethos special. To fully grasp that, you need to be part of the Hollybush school community. For almost 130 years, Hollybush has been instrumental in forming the children of Culmore and the wider region academically, spiritually, physically, socially and emotionally. Many of our past pupils have achieved national and international repute in their chosen careers, and all will attest to the importance of their early formation here. We pride ourselves in combining traditional and innovative teaching methods in the pursuit of excellence, and in achieving the highest possible standards for our pupils.

We also value the importance of sport and music in developing the whole child, and have achieved much success in these areas through a vibrant programme of after school activities.

As a Catholic school with a strong commitment to faith development, and in partnership with the parish, we help our children to come to know God through daily prayer, liturgical experiences, sacramental work and the development of their understanding of bible stories. We welcome those of other religious denominations and will always show respect and reverence for their beliefs and values.

The quality of provision at Hollybush Primary and Nursery School was affirmed by the ETI Inspection report in November 2013 when all aspects of school life were deemed outstanding. The full report can be viewed on the ETI website.

All parents want what is best for their children. At Hollybush, we view parental involvement as essential to a child's success at school. Here, parents are active partners in their children's learning and in the general life of the school. The relationship between staff and parents is one of mutual respect borne from a desire to help our children to develop and flourish to their full potential.

We also value greatly our partnership with community organisations. Working with groups such as the Culmore Community Partnership, we are constantly striving to create a vibrant and stimulating environment for our pupils and their families, both in school and in the surrounding locality.

Our motto, Bonum Videre Optimum Educere means, ‘to see the good in, and draw the best out of’ (our children). At Hollybush, we are dedicated to providing the best possible education for your child. At all times, we do everything in our power to ensure that our pupils are happy, secure and receiving all the formative experiences that will enable them to become lifelong learners and successful, well-balanced adults who make a valuable contribution to society. We have seen many changes and have come a long way since our doors opened in 1891, but what remains is an enduring tradition of achieving excellence in every area of school life. If you are a prospective parent, please feel free to get in touch and a tour of our school can be arranged.

Kind regards

Mr Feargal Friel (Acting Principal)
